Communication- The most important of Interpersonal skills

Interpersonal skills are classified as soft skills which are essential towards personal development. These are some of the skills that you should be having. You should learn these for your personal growth. Not only will interpersonal skills be useful in the contemporary setting of any field, but they will also be important in developing your own life. Communication is one of the essential basics which a person should learn.

Interpersonal skills, as it says is the skill which deals with the skills related to talking, listening, and communicating with other fellow humans. It is the quality or behavior which is needed in interacting with people. When you interact with people, your body language, your verbal tones all indicate what kind of a human you are. Therefore, it is essential to make sure you use the proper tones to get your points across. From what I have personally seen, people who want to convey a message fail to do that because they lack their interpersonal skills of communication.

Communication is key

These are the quintessential skills that many have not learned to master. Communication is key to any career path you choose. If you want to get your point across, you have to make sure you can communicate and express yourself properly. There are certain points you have to keep in mind while communicating. Those are:

  • Clarity: You have to be sure that your words and message are coherent. The receiver has to be able to understand what you are speaking. For this, you have to use simple words which the receiver can understand. Before you say anything, you have to have a clear picture of what you want to convey. In simpler terms, know what you have to say before you say it. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be prepared before talking; it just means that you have to take a second or two to think and then set your ideas forward.
  • Relevance: Stay relevant when you are communicating. No one wants the conversation to go off on a tangent, especially in a professional setting. You have to stay on point and state your points appropriate to the topic at hand. You have to say the right things at the right time. This is the best way to get your point across in the least amount of time while maintaining accuracy.
  • Feedback: Communication is a 2-way process. Receiving a suitable reply for the information you have conveyed is important as it conveys that the information you have sent forward is understood. This reply from the receiver gives assurance that the communication is successful. One way to ensure feedback is to ask the receiver questions so that they have to reply. Even a nod can be considered as feedback.
  • Consistency: Your thoughts and ideas must be consistent throughout the entire communication. It is easy to go off on a tangent from the topic, but that would defeat the purpose of the needed communication. Hence, you have to stay consistent in the information that you want to convey.

These skills even if they don’t boost your academic performance, are just as important as marks. These are life lessons and they will help you in personal growth in your academic as well as your professional life.
