WOMEN IN NDA – A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

The new order regarding women in NDA that was issues by the supreme court and how to apply for this exam as a female cadet

For centuries our society has been patriarchal. Here women are considered WEAKER! then men. Why is it so? Why this mindset? Slowly but steadily our country is taking steps to break the gender stereotypes and giving women equal opportunities as men. We are definitely not there yet and still have a long way to go, but this is a stepping stone in the right direction.

On August 18, the court issued an order allowing females to give the NDA exam which was to be held on September 5. The supreme court stated that the criteria of admission in the forces were based on “GENDER DISCRIMINATION”. Following this, The Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) issued a notification for the online application form for NDA( NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY) and NAE( NAVAL ACADEMY EXAMINATION) for women candidates only. From May 2022, female cadets can sit for the NDA examination.

A petition was filed stating how women with proper requirements are being denied the opportunity to sit in the NDA exams solely based on their gender. The petition also pointed out the minority of women in the armed forces. the petition stated-“The respondents’ act of categorically excluding eligible and willing female candidates from appearing for the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examinations solely on the basis of sex over the years is a violation of the fundamental right to equality before the law and equal protection under the law.

When it comes to women serving in the armed forces, there is a gender stereotype and a mindset problem that has stopped this decision from being taken for so long. Even now people are questioning whether women are physically capable or not. Women will go through the same rigorous training as their male counterparts and will serve the nation with dignity. There is no such thing as a better and more capable gender. It is high time we start treating women and men equally and this policy is a step towards it.

NDA being a male-dominated academy will come with its own challenges and it will definitely not be easy for women, but every new step comes with its own difficulties and that is how changes happen.
