Weak in IIT JEE Chemistry? Here is how to conquer it

5 Minute Read

For many students, chemistry might feel like an unpassable mountain range. Its sheer vastness will falter even the strongest of minds. They will feel as if it is not possible to learn chemistry. From the depths of organic to the heights of physical, students may feel that it is impossible to learn them all in such a short span of time. But, I’m here to tell you that it is completely possible, and chemistry is not that big of an obstacle as it may seem.

You may be finding chemistry difficult for a lot of reasons. One of the reasons why I found it difficult was that it wasn’t following any pattern. There were many exceptions to the rule when it came to the properties of compounds or the properties of elements. I found that weird and hard to study. So what I did was I wrote down which part felt tough to me. It was the periodic table. That was way too difficult for me to remember all the properties and patterns involved. Along with that, the exceptions, so what I did was I studied each element separately. I used to study 2 elements each day. And every following day, I used to revise what I studied the days before. This way, I could learn the entire table, but it took a lot of time.

The time was worth it. It is really worth spending that much time on chemistry, because not only is chemistry one of the easiest subjects to score marks on but it is also an interesting subject if you can understand it, which I didn’t at the start, but then I understood it even if it was just a little bit.

The trick to cracking chemistry is as follows:

  • Learn, don’t memorize. The biggest mistake students try to make is to memorize. Yes, there are many exceptions to the rules in chemistry, but that doesn’t mean you get to memorize them all. Some have a reason as to why they are exceptions. Know those reasons and learn them. Then, it would be sitting well in your memory, and when the time comes, you will know what an exception is and what isn’t.
  • Practice, practice, and practice. A piece of Underrated advice that many don’t follow. Write down whatever you are studying. Write it 2 or 3 times till it is firmly implanted in your mind. Then again, when you see the question in the exam, it will be easy for you to answer it.
  • Maintain a strict timetable for chemistry. Since you find chemistry hard, I suggest that you keep a good timetable and separate the time you allot for chemistry into 3 parts: organic, one for inorganic, and the other for physical. This way, you will completely utilize your time for only one part at a time, and you won’t be scrambling later on.
