Larsen & Toubro Infotech and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras are planning a 5G research collaboration. The multinational technology consulting and digital solutions business will partner with one of India’s top research institutes to build future 5G venues. The collaboration’s purpose is to validate 5G frameworks, deploy low-frequency RF, and assess use cases through a 5G testbed.
Through this partnership, LTI and IIT-Madras hope to innovate in the developing 5G area by enabling 5G framework validation, low-frequency RF deployments, and use case testing via a 5G testbed.
As part of this arrangement, LTI and IIT-Madras will collaborate on research to build a low-cost, low-frequency 5G network for improved connectivity in rural India. According to the firms, “the basic goal of this endeavor is to build a 5G base station and single-box solution to enable the rural connection.”
“5G promises to assist the next level of innovation in the development of a smarter society,” said LTI Chief Operating Officer Nachiket Deshpande. “However, ensuring that these advantages reach every corner of our country is important.”
LTI’s involvement in this research and innovation project is part of its CSR program 1Step (SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). In addition, this relationship is linked to the Government of India’s ‘Make-in-India’ program, as it supports the construction of an indigenous 5G network.
Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras, Professor Mahesh Panchagnula, stated, “IITM’s 5G testbed project encourages Indian startups and the industry to take an early lead in 5G.”
Dr. Radha Krishna Ganti, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras and Principal Investigator for this CSR initiative, feels that 5G technology holds immense promise and maybe the most effective solution to bridge India’s digital divide. “It will help progress and boost the benefits of digital technology by providing a faster broadband network for developed urban areas,” he said.
The partnership with IIT Madras adds to LTI’s expertise in 5G-based solutions. LTI will also collaborate with IIT Madras to develop and validate use cases based on the 5G testbed for use in a variety of areas, including smart manufacturing, Industry 4.0, Smart Cities, and Media.
These initiatives are targeted at developing a cutting-edge 5G framework and allowing end customers to use the 5G infrastructure to accelerate their digital transformation.
